PostHeaderIcon Volga Linen – My Review

Today’s Home furnishing resource on Williams blog is Volga Linen. The site is a ready reckoner to the business ventures of Volga Linen, a pure linen trading company. The British company deals in pure linen served from the very best yards of Europe and Russia. The fabric is largely done in plain weaves but they are embellished by an exquisite work of embroidery and stripe. Apart from a brilliant range of children accessories, there are bed linen, table linen and various ready-to-use curtains.

The company was set up some 12 years ago and in its formative days it largely shipped its linen from various parts of Russia. During those days, it was difficult getting in touch with the very best manufacturing and supply line; diligent work done at an industrious pace helped set up a reliable infrastructure of the company. The site talks about the brilliant odyssey of the company into the linen business and how it has been able to marry the conventional linen work with contemporary flair.

As we all know, flax is a renewable crop that needs virtually no pesticide, the company uses only flax for manufacturing its linen. This way, it stands tall to the laid yardsticks of environmental-friendliness.

The site lets you endorse to its Newsletter as well as ask for a catalogue of products. You can shop online through the site’s resources. Apart from buying various kinds of bed linens, you can also find facility for gift wrapping and monogramming. You can find various cushion covers, fabrics and clothes, nightwear, curtains, towels and a lot more. In fact, it is a very rare company that excels both in the quality of its endeavors and the quantity that it easily assimilates. King Platform Bed with built in storage drawers.

PostHeaderIcon Basic Feng Shui – The Art of Arranging your Furniture

Feng Shui is a complex theory, and involves many different principles that are designed to make living and working spaces more positive for each individual, by balancing energy (Yin and Yang). It takes many years to become a professional Feng Shui consultant, and a complete Feng Shui house makeover would first involve working out your Kua, which is the number that determines which factors are best for you individually, and is based on a simple system of using your birth date (from the Chinese Lunar Calendar) and your sex, using this calculation:

  1. Males – 10 minus the last two digits of the year you were born (if two digits add these together until they are one digit)
  2. Females – 5 plus the last two digits of the year you were born (if two digits add these together until they are one digit)

Your Kua is important when working out factors such as the way your head should point to whilst you are sleeping, which is very important in Feng Shui, as north, south, east and west or all assigned different properties in relation to your Kua. The majority of Kua’s have westerly affinities and so arranging your bed in this direction is luckiest for most, with the north and south bringing more disruptive influences:

Kua 1 and 4 people – you have an affinity with the east, and the direction of southeast is thought to be the luckiest, and a good direction to face your head whilst you are sleeping. Avoid west or northeast directions as these can bring harmful influences your way.
Kua 5 person – if you are male, you will have an affinity with the northeast, if you are female then it will be for the southwest. The opposite directions will bring trouble and difficulties if used by the other sex.
There are some basic Feng Shui principles that can apply whatever you Kua, and these are simply and easy to use in your own home
Mirrors – these are both good and bad in Feng Shui, as they deflecting and absorb harmful influences, but they are uniformly thought to be negative in bedroom spaces, as they interfere with the flow of chi (energy) whilst you sleep. If you do have a mirror in your bedroom, move it or hand a cloth over it when you are not using it, and do not face it opposite a door or window (it will reflect all the energy coming in).
Windows – energy comes into your house through the windows, and so they should be clean and clear of clutter, with the drapes pulled back during the day.
Corners – corners funnel negative energy, so avoid putting any seats here and instead deflect negative energy by placing a positive object in this space, such as a plant or glass cabinet.

PostHeaderIcon Furnishing a New Home on a Budget

Furnishing a new home can be very expensive, especially as many people have previously lived in rented or shared accommodation and do not have any furniture to bring with them, or they may have owned a completely different home before, and none of the furniture from there is suitable now (too large, too small or too outdated). However furnishing a home from scratch can be done on a budget, as long as you spend put in some time and effort on shopping around and DIY decorating. Here are a few low cost furnishing tips to get you started:
Carpets – re-carpeting a house can be one of the biggest furnishing expenses for new home owners, so it does make sense to keep as much of the original carpet as you can. Go through each room and rate the carpets in terms of cleanliness, wear and aesthetics. Dirty carpets that still have some good wear in them can be cleaned, and a professional carpet steam cleaner can be hired at reasonable rates. Only replace carpets that really cannot be saved, and if any carpets are still good, but you really want to change them for aesthetics sake, see if you can use them to replace any worn carpets in any of the other less well used rooms.
Second Hand Furniture – there is lots of second hand furniture around, so look out for adverts in your local paper or supermarket notice board, or visit used furniture shops, flea markets and house clearance sales in your area, where you can pick up some great bargains. Remember to measure the spaces available in your rooms carefully before you leave (to ensure furniture will fit), and look for well made solid frames, with clean rip free upholstery. It can be time consuming and sometimes costly repairing and reupholstering furniture so avoid anything that needs too much work, even if it does seem like a bargain at the time.
Be Creative – many people on a budget think they only have enough money for the essential furnishings, and this can make new homes feel a little bland. However with a little imagination there is a lot you can do to spice up your new home. For example f you cannot afford to buy pictures or prints to hang, then you could look around for some pretty wall paper samples, which are often free from DIY shops, and then paste these to pieces of light MDF or plywood an hang them around your home to create areas of interest.
